Punjab Shehri Awas Yojana To Provide Affordable Housing To Urban Poor

As per the earlier claims of the state government that by 2041, more than 50 per cent of the population of the state is anticipated to be living in urban areas it has been deemed necessary to provide affordable housing for urban poor in the state. Last year, the state government of Punjab launched Punjab Shehri Awas Yojana, a free housing scheme for the SC/BC families across the state.

The aim of the new housing scheme is to provide free home facilities to the eligible candidates from SC/ST/BS communities in urban areas in the state. Other than the non-completion of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana ( Housing For All), the questions are being raised on the delay to provide free houses to the poor and destitute.

According to the figure projected by the census of 2011, the number of people living below poverty line have been found to be approximately 2 lakh, comprising both urban and rural belt. Where the urban poor as well as as the rural poor constitute 7.89% and 12.66% of the total population, respectively. To provide benefits of the scheme the population of needy has been categorised under four verticals.

Assistant Project Officer at Municipal Corporation said, though the survey regarding the total number of beneficiaries of the scheme was completed a year before, no financial assistance was drawn from the government. Also the central government had allocated budget to the state government but it is yet to be further disseminated to the cities.

The district would receive the budget after 31 march this year. And financial assistance of Rs 1,50,000 will be provided to the urban poor in three installments to convert their kutcha house into pakka house.
