Mizoram Rural Housing Scheme Under New Economic Development Policy

Rural development minister on Tuesday launched the chief minister’s Mizoram rural housing scheme under the flagship programme New Economic Development Policy (NEDP) across the state.

Launching the Mizoram rural housing scheme during a function held at rural development department conference hall in Aizawl, he said the government is committed to the upliftment of the underprivileged section of society.

The chief minister’s Mizoram rural housing scheme was designed especially for underprivileged families in rural villages. He said the government has been giving assistance to economically-backwards families through various schemes.

According to the minister, Rs 50,000 each would be given to beneficiaries under the housing scheme. The chief minister’s housing scheme is a pilot scheme under the NEDP, which is designed to give housing assistance to poor families in rural areas.

The rural development department is the nodal agency. The assistance would be disbursed to the beneficiaries through the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) through the department.

District-level selection committees have been constituted under the leadership of the respective deputy commissioners of all the district headquarters to select the beneficiaries.

The chief minister’s Mizoram rural housing scheme was earlier launched in 2016-17 in three districts – Serchhip, Lawngtlai and Saiha and Rs 6 crore had been spent for the purpose.

During fiscal 2017-18, Rs 100 crore has been allocated for the implementation of the scheme in all eight districts.

Altogether 499 beneficiaries have been selected from Aizawl district, 415 from Champhai district, 619 from Lunglei district, 300 from Mamit district, 167 from Kolasib district, 200 from Serchhip district and 500 each from Lawngtlai and Siaha districts.
