Corporation to Monitor 5000 Affordable Housing Townships Maharashtra

For monitoring 5000 Affordable Housing Townships Maharashtra in various parts, Maharashtra government is planning a corporation.

In the first phase, the focus will be on key cities, including Pune and Mumbai, a senior state housing department official said. A note of consent is being sought from the revenue, finance and urban development departments to initiate the process following which a proposal for joint venture between government and private builders for construction on either private or government land will be considered.

The state housing department is seeking an opinion from revenue and finance departments and is keen to start a joint venture for affordable housing. The state has set a target of housing for all by 2022 and has got permission for 60 projects in affordable housing with nearly 1.8 lakh homes to be constructed.

The initial corpus for the corporation will be a little over Rs 2,000 crore with support from local authorities and banks who are expected to pump in another Rs 500 crore for the proposed corporation.

The corporation is expected to rope in lead builders and contractors with easy permission. The houses will be allotted only to Low Income Group, Economically Weaker Section and Middle Income Group. With additional FSI being given, developers will be keen to come forward. Officials from the state home department stated that Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) can help the corporation.

PMRDA has already proposed town planning schemes to fund the ring road around Pune and these schemes will house both residential and corporate hubs and include affordable housing projects.

Credai-Maharashtra president said there was a definite improvement in affordable housing, especially in the state and Rajasthan. There are many big developers in affordable housing and in Pune too developers are keen to be a part of affordable housing. Any initiative would only help in giving a boost to this sector.
