Given the widespread poverty across the country, making available reasonably priced quality medicines in the market would benefit everyone, especially the poor and the disadvantaged. This has been always a major concern for the Government of India. Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has been taking several regulatory and fiscal measures from time to time towards realizing the objective. This is the primary Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana benefits.
Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana benefits are towards the noble project launched by Government of India in the year 2008 for the noble cause – Quality Medicines at affordable prices for all. The Pariyojana was undertaken through sale of affordable generic medicines through exclusive outlets namely “Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra” in various districts of the country. The first PMBJA Kendra was opened on 25th November 2008 at Amritsar in Punjab.

Making quality medicines available at affordable prices for all, particularly the poor and disadvantaged through exclusive outlets “Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra”, so as to reduce and redefine the unit cost of treatment per person.

- Create awareness among public regarding generic medicines.
- Create demand for generic medicines through medical practitioners.
- Create awareness through education and awareness program that high price need not be synonymous with high quality.
- Provide all commonly used medicines covering all the therapeutic groups.
- Provide all the related healthcare products too under the scheme.
Implementation of the ‘Jan Aushadhi’ Campaign
This Jan Aushadhi Campaign has already started with the opening of the first Jan Aushadhi on 25th November 2008 with the active participation of the CPSUs namely, IDPL,HAL,BPCWith the launch of the Jan Aushadhi store at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, on campaign is reaching an ambitious phase of launching of more than 45 stores Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Haryana, Bihar, UP, Assam and Chhattisgarh five Jan Aushadhi drug stores are coming up in Punjab, one each at Bhatinda, Jalandhar, and Mohali in February 2009 with additional stores opening up at Panchkula and Faridabad shortly. The above efforts have met with good success as is clear from the media coverage.

The Jan Aushadhi initiative will make available quality drugs at affordable prices through dedicated stores selling generic medicines which are available at lesser prices but are equivalent in quality and efficacy as expensive branded drugs.
